Well, I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Actually grew up in DeSoto, Texas, but I went to medical school at A&M, and then ended up in general surgery residency. I always wanted to be a surgeon, even when I started medical school, and not long after that I definitely started considering plastic surgery just for the art that is involved in plastic surgery. When I was a general surgery resident, during your first year was called your internship, you rotate through all the different specialties like heart surgery which is cardiothoracic surgery plastic surgery.
When I did my plastic surgery rotation, the very first case I did on the first day was a breast reduction, and I mean, I really knew right then that I wanted to be a plastic surgeon. It was just something fascinating about the case to me where you're taking somebody, and really you take something apart first, and then put it back together to a form that was better than it started.
The number one thing that I enjoy about plastic surgery is my relationship with the patients. There's no other field of medicine where what you're doing is making a difference on a person's outer shell and their body. And it really affects their self-esteem and just how good they feel about themselves. So it's interesting that I've done cancer surgery, and all other kinds of surgery, but the bonds that I develop with plastic surgery patients are deeper than those other types of surgical specialties.
