Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin by creating tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin which alerts the skin to create new collagen and elastin.  During this treatment, a specialized hand piece with very tiny needles is guided over the treatment area.  Areas treated with microneedling are typically the face, neck, chest and hands.  Treatments can be customized with the depth of needle penetration for simple skin refreshment or deep scar repair anywhere on the body.  Patients usually feel light pressure as the hand piece is guided over the treatment area.

Microneedling with PRP uses your own plasma applied to the face throughout the treatment and offers maximum benefits for collagen and elastin rejuvenation. 

The area will have some redness and tightness immediately after the treatment and this can last up to a few days as the collagen rejuvenation process occurs.  For optimal results, a series of treatments, three to four weeks apart, may be recommended.  

What to Expect During Treatment

Although a microneedling treatment is generally considered to be very comfortable, your doctor or technician will provide a topical anesthetic prior to treatment to minimize any potential discomfort. During the procedure, we will gently guide a handheld device over the treatment area. This specialized device precisely delivers pulses of light, increasing the skin's production of collagen for a smoother, suppler appearance. The entire procedure can be completed in as little as 30 minutes. For many patients, Dr. Smart will recommend return visits to complete a series of four to six treatments, each spaced roughly three to four weeks apart.

Recovery and Aftercare

A microneedling treatment requires very little recovery time, approximately 24 to 48 hours.  For the first few hours after leaving the office, the treated skin will have redness that resembles a mild sunburn. The redness may fade within 24 hours but could last up to 48 hours.  Skin may feel warm, tight and itchy for up to 48 hours and you may experience peeling or flaking that can often occur for up to 4 days following the treatment. Patients are advised to use recommended products to cleanse the skin in the first 12 hours after treatment, but you can start applying makeup again after 24 hours. Dr. Smart recommends that patients apply sunscreen to the treatment area throughout the healing process in order to prevent irritation. It may take 6 to 8 weeks for patients to see visible results in their skin.
