Dr. Ken Smart can address signs of aging in your neck, jawline, smile lines, and eyelids with facelift surgery. Any healthy patient can qualify for a facelift, but most facelift patients are between 45 and 55 years old. Recovery from facelift surgery takes about two weeks.
Benefits of a Facelift Procedure

Eliminate Lines & Wrinkles
Many patients find that with age, their skin loses its elasticity and develops a crepe-like appearance. This procedure can reduce deep wrinkles and age lines under the cheekbones, around the corners of your smile, and along the jawline.
Remove Excess Fat and Skin
The plastic surgeon will be able to reduce jowls (sagging under the cheeks) and restore youthful definition by removing excess skin and fat. This can be especially dramatic in the lower third of the face.

Types of Treatment and Less Invasive Options

Traditional Facelift
A standard or “traditional” facelift provides a more comprehensive solution for moderate to advanced signs of aging in the face. While the surgery is more extensive than the mini facelift alternative, the results are more dramatic and target a larger region. Dr. Smart can reposition the deeper tissues beneath the skin to refine the more pronounced effects of aging. A traditional lift eliminates excess skin and tightens remaining skin to smooth wrinkles, eliminate heavy jowls, and refine the shape of the jaw
Mini Facelift
Patients who have less pronounced concerns and a relatively minor amount of sagging skin are often good candidates for a mini facelift. During this less invasive procedure, Dr. Smart will tighten deep facial tissues through shorter incisions, typically along the hairline around each ear. Because it is a less extensive surgery, the recovery time for the mini facelift is generally quicker.
Combining Treatments
We commonly perform additional procedures, such as neck lifts or brow lifts, in conjunction with a facelift to achieve total facial rejuvenation. For example, many patients choose to combine a facelift and neck lift for an overall tightened appearance. The procedure can also be combined with an endoscopic brow lift, upper and lower eyelid lifts, lip and chin augmentation, and CO2 laser resurfacing. The Timeline of a Traditional Rhytidectomy

Recovery & Aftercare
Day One
You will need direct nursing care the night of your plastic surgery. Some patients spend one night in the hospital or other home nursing care arrangements can be made. You will have a bulky headwrap on when you wake up after surgery. You may or may not have drains. Pain can usually be controlled with oral pain medication, but if necessary IV pain medication will be given.
Days Two through Five
You will need your bandages changed the morning after the procedure, either in the hospital or at our office. Dr. Smart generally removes the drainage tube during this appointment as well. We will remove your sutures in stages, beginning usually about five days after surgery. The final sutures come out after two weeks. At this time, most of the bruising has usually resolved but it can take several more weeks for the swelling to go away.
Weeks One and Two
Bruising and swelling will begin to recede around 10 to 14 days after the surgery. Most patients can return to work at this time. Our team can provide further information about when you can begin working out and performing other activities.
Two Weeks Onward
In about two weeks, when the swelling goes down, you will begin to see the results of the surgery. In approximately four to six weeks, most patients can resume their normal routine. Make sure to attend your follow-up appointments with Dr. Smart and contact our office if you have questions at any point in your recovery.
