Achieve a Radiant, Youthful Look

Aging, sun damage, and smoking can all contribute significantly to wrinkling of the skin of the face.  A deep chemical peel is the most reliable and long-lasting treatment for all of the different causes of wrinkling. Your skin may also have splotchy brown areas that can be the result of pregnancy, birth control pills, sun damage, and aging. Scarring may also result from acne during the years of adolescence, or even later. All of these problems can be treated with a deep chemical peel using either TCA or croton oil.

Dr. Smart is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He was trained by leaders in the field of plastic surgery and has performed hundreds of chemical peels to the skin of the face and neck. If you are considering a deep chemical peel, the information contained here may help answer some of your questions. If you would like to explore your options further, please call and schedule a consultation with Dr. Smart at which time he will perform a full evaluation of your skin and discuss with you your best options.

Am I a good candidate?

Candidates for a deep chemical peel of the face and neck show typical signs of aging, such as wrinkling around the eyes, mouth, and neck, sun damage, and acne scarring. Dr. Smart will perform a full evaluation of your skin and determine if you are a candidate. If you have taken Accutane® in the past, you should be off for at least 12 months before having the laser procedure performed. Also, if you have a history of keloid scarring you may not be a good candidate. Be prepared to discuss your past medical history and specifically all of the treatments you have done to your skin.

What are the different types of deep chemical peels?

There are many different types of deep peels but the two most commonly used by Dr. Smart to treat wrinkling of the skin are the TCA and croton oil. These chemicals peels penetrate the skin causing a chemical reaction resulting in a removal of dead skin and new collagen synthesis.  A deep chemical peel such as croton oil is considered the gold standard for wrinkle correction of the face and neck.

What type of anesthesia is required?

Some patients are able to undergo laser resurfacing under IV sedation. However, most require general anesthesia.  If the procedure is being performed in conjunction with a facelift or other procedures, it is usually performed under general anesthesia.

What will my recovery be like?

After a chemical peel of the face and neck, there will be redness and swelling. The surface of the skin will ooze for about one week. You will clean your face several times a day with warm soap and water and place a special ointment on your skin to help keep it moist. When the oozing stops, you will notice that your skin is red, but you will already begin to notice the improvement in the appearance of your skin. After seven to 10 days you are able to start wearing special makeup to help conceal the redness. It takes approximately 6 to 12 weeks for the redness to completely resolve. During this time it is extremely important that you use sunscreen at all times because your skin will be hypersensitive to sunlight during the healing process. To help maintain your results it is very important to maintain a good skin care regimen, wear sunscreen at all times, and refrain from smoking.

How much does a deep chemical peel cost?

At the end of your consultation, Dr. Smart's patient coordinator will go over your personalized quote with you that includes Dr. Smart's fee, the anesthesiologist’s fee, and facility fee.
