Best Time to Get a Mommy Makeover: Planning for Optimal Results
We know you might be sick of hearing it: pregnancy and childbirth are amazing, life-changing experiences. When you look in the mirror, though, the effects can be life-changing in a different kind of way. Fortunately, mommy makeover procedures can beautifully restore your pre-pregnancy breasts, tummy, and more. Are you wondering what the best time for a mommy makeover is? In this blog post, I’ll answer that question for mothers in Frisco, Plano, and all of North Texas who are considering plastic surgery. Each patient’s treatment plan is based on unique factors but there are a few general guidelines to consider.
Are You Finished Having Children?
Arguably the most important question to consider is whether you might want to add to your family in the future. If there’s any hesitation before you answer “no,” we’ll recommend you wait. As you know, pregnancy substantially stretches the skin of the abdomen, among other changes, so if you become pregnant again after something like tummy tuck surgery, the effects will essentially be reversed.
Another consideration related to whether or not you want to have more children: while women can still nurse after having implants placed, it can limit the treatment options available to them. Which brings us to the topic of breastfeeding…
Are You Done Breastfeeding?
The ability to breastfeed your child is another miraculous feat. Once you stop, it’s recommended that you wait at least six months for your breasts to adjust and stop changing. A mommy makeover can address several types of concerns:
- Loss of volume
- Sagging skin
- Asymmetry between the breasts
- Enlarged nipples
- Excess breast tissue
Are You Happy With Your Weight?
Liposuction and other body contouring procedures are often featured as part of a mommy makeover. It’s important for our patients to recognize these are not weight-loss procedures. You should be at or close to your target weight before we will approve you to move forward with surgery. Similar to becoming pregnant again, if you lose a substantial amount of weight after a tummy tuck, for example, you could be left with more sagging skin.
What time of year should you get a mommy makeover?
I have decades of experience and use advanced techniques to minimize scarring. Plus, I’m able to hide many incisions so that even in a bikini, they will be hidden beneath fabric.
Even though this is the case, there is still the chance incisions will be exposed to the sun depending on your clothing and the treatments you choose to undergo. Sun exposure will increase the chance scars will become more prominent and visible. You’ll also need to stay out of the ocean and other types of water to minimize the risk of infection.
For these reasons, many of our mommy makeover patients choose to have their treatment performed in the fall or winter seasons. This will leave the treatment sites plenty of time to heal before you hit the beach, lake, or swimming pool.
