Are Saline Implants Right for Me?
Women who naturally lack ample breast tissue or those who have experienced body changes that have resulted in the loss of breast volume or shape often turn to breast augmentation surgery to enhance the size and shape of the bust line. By customizing the many aspects of breast augmentation surgery to each patient’s unique needs and desires, Dr. Ken Smart is able to help women achieve their ideal bust line. While all aspects of breast augmentation are important, one of the greatest decisions a patient will make is choosing between silicone and saline breast implants. Each implant type has its own advantages and disadvantages to consider. Here, Dr. Smart helps Dallas patients explore saline breast implant pros and cons to determine if it is the right implant choice for them.
Pros of Saline Implants
There are several advantages to consider when it comes to saline breast implants. While both silicone and saline implants have been proven to be safe for patients, many still prefer saline implants. Below are some of the pros of saline implants that make them the implant of choice for many of our patients:
- Natural filling: Although silicone implants have been approved as a safe surgical option, many still prefer the natural filling of saline implants. The saline solution can be easily and naturally absorbed by the body if a rupture were to occur, making many patients feel safer going with this implant option.
- Detection of leaks: Because the saline solution is absorbed by the body, it also allows patients to immediately detect a leak or rupture. This is a benefit that is not enjoyed by those with silicone implants.
- More incision options: Saline implants are inserted as empty shells and then filled once they are in place. Because of this, they can be placed through any breast implant incision, including the transaxillary incision, which is placed in the armpit. This incision, which leaves no scars on the breasts, is not an option for patients with silicone implants.
- Size flexibility: Another benefit of saline implants is the flexibility to alter size. Again, these implants are filled after they are in place, so Dr. Smart can make small adjustments to implant size to closely achieve a patient’s desired results.
Cons of Saline Implants
While saline implants offer many advantages, patients should also consider the cons of saline implants before choosing an implant type. There is one major drawback to saline implants and that is the fact that they do not mimic breast tissue as closely as silicone implants do. This means that the breasts may not look or feel as natural as they could with the use of silicone implants. While some patients consider this just a minor drawback of saline implants, for others, this is a major con that leads them to opt for silicone implants over saline.
