Eyelid Surgery Side Effects
Most side effects after eyelid surgery are temporary and usually subside within a couple weeks. They include:
- Swelling and Bruising. The area around the eye often responds to surgery with swelling and bruising. Most noticeable swelling goes down in two weeks. However, depending on the person, it may take up to three months for all swelling to disappear. Bruising usually fades within two weeks of surgery. Cold compresses or an ice pack can reduce symptoms. Keeping the head elevated as much as possible is also helpful in reducing swelling. Strenuous activity, which increases blood flow to the eyes, should be avoided.
- Soreness. Your eyelids may feel sore for a few days after surgery.The discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medicine but, if needed, prescription medicines can be prescribed.
- Itchy, Irritated Eyes. You will be provided ointment to deal with itchy eyes, a common response to surgery.
- Scarring. Initially your scars will be noticeable, but with time, they should fade to thin white lines, which are typically hidden in a crease.
Temporary vision problems are also associated with eyelid surgery, including light sensitivity, blurry vision, and poor night vision.
Less common side effects are also possible, and include:
- Eyelid numbness
- Difficulty closing eyes
- Excessive tearing
- Insufficient tearing
Complications
The risk of complications with eyelid surgery is low when performed by an experienced and board-certified surgeon, but the risk still exists. Serious complications, which are very rare, include nerve damage, permanent blindness, and double vision.
